About This Site

Referrals you can trust

Our mission is to help Massachusetts residents find legal help and information.

The programs listed in our directory are non profits that offer free or low cost legal services.

Most of these programs can only serve low-income Massachusetts residents.  Some programs can help Massachusetts residents of any income, particularly if you are age 60 or older or a victim of crime or abuse.

We do not make referrals to individual lawyers.  However, we do have a list of Bar Referral Services that will give you contact information for specific attorneys.  In most cases, you will need to pay the attorney if you decide that you want their help.

We also have links to legal information created by legal services programs, government agencies and other not-for-profit entities.

We are funded by government entities and grants; we do not accept payment from the programs listed in the directory.

How to use the Find Legal Help search tool

If you live in Massachusetts, you can use this search.

You can enter a short description of your legal problem in the search box.  Or, you can pick a legal topic from the list. Once you have narrowed down your problem, you will enter your income and household size, your town or zip code and whether you are age 60 or older.

You will get the most results if you also share certain other information about yourself, like whether you are a veteran.  This information is not required but sharing it will help to get the most results.  The information you give is anonymous.

The results page will give you contact information for legal programs that might be able to help. You will need to contact them directly to apply for service.  Each program makes its own decisions about whether they can help.

The results page will also give you links to legal information, so you can learn more on your own.

The Find Legal Help search can only help with one problem at a time. But you can use it as many times as you need.

There are no 'wrong' answers. Answer the questions as best you can. You can always go back and change your answers.
